Back on track...

It's been a long time since I posted. So there.

Since my last post back in August I have visited New York and all of it's amazing sites AND moved into a brand new, £18m, state-of-the-art school campus where I work. It's all very exciting, and a good enough reason to have been slack on here - or so I tell myself.

By the way - New York is an incredible place, I had an ace two weeks there and recommend a visit to anyone that's willing to listen. On a music tip, I went to 'Rock The Bells' on Governor's Island with an allstar line-up, followed up by the last Pool Party of the summer by the water in Williamsburg, Brooklyn - again with a sweet line up. Add that to an interesting trip to Cielo, and an underground, little known Jazz place called 'Nublu' and we have a shit hot adventure in the Big Apple. Might put some pics up soon. Maybe.

For now though - back to the music the best way I know how... LIQUID.

Firstly - get this club tune out of my system. It's a good'un...

Now two videos from UNKLE. Same track ('The Answer'), two different directors. Both sync up really well considering the stark contrast in content.
The first, directed by John Hillcoat, stars Ray Winstone with a story to tell set to some thought provoking imagery.
The second video, directed by Ross Cairns, accompanies the dreamy, feel good music with film-like-footage tastefully shot of extreme sports - surfing and snowboarding.
Considering the differing focus of both videos you would expect one to really work and the other to maybe not quite fit right. Whereas infact they both pull it off. Which one is your favourite?

Magnetic Man

I have been meaning to post about Magnetic Man for a while now - and during that time every other blog has done the same - but they're making so much noise right now it's definitely still worth mentioning.
I will always remember being at The Warehouse Project a couple of years back and watching Magnetic Man enter the stage...

The lights went out throughout the underground air raid shelter, except for a small ultra-violet glow which was emitting from the front, behind a seemingly smaller stage than I remember. Long, black curtains had deliberately been drawn in across the stage, and the screen lowered above the deck stand in order to create this tiny square of UV light - it was the focus of everyones attention.
Then, with no warning the three dubstep musketeers - Benga, Skream and Artwork - filed in. Appearing in almost military fashion one behind the other, all three in a perfect line and wearing striking, pure white hoodies which obviously caught the glare from the blacklights and created this almost sci-fi feel to what they were about to do.
They were in perfect sync, not only with how they looked and what they wore, but also with what they had in their hands. Their white Macbooks were clearly visible, and again with this jet-fighter precision they layed them on the table - in sync - and opened them up together. They connected them in unison and the first tune dropped...

It was way back then that it was clear Magnetic Man had a plan. Shortly after this I found myself in Brighton and recall a friend of mine, 'Figure Of Wax', bumping into Artwork and the gang outside his work. They were in town for a show, and from what Artwork explained to him it seemed like he already knew big things were on the horizon.

There will be many Dubstep purists who will listen to what Magnetic Man are doing right now and have a massive hate-up on them. Vocalists? Big, trancey synths? Music videos? "Dubstep has gone pop!" you'll hear them cry. Fuck them and the horse they rode in on. The UK has always, but always been about discovering new sounds and pushing them on. New genres break out and EVERYBODY has something to listen to. It's exciting. It's us.

What, it seems, Magnetic Man are doing - whether deliberately or not, is sending Dubstep into the stratosphere. It's no longer a genre for dimly lit underground caverns, or reserved for ravers bedrooms. It's the sound of now and the music of the people. It's become an event. If Daft Punk made Dubstep it would resemble something like Magnetic Man - huge stages, incredible light shows, thousands of unified music lovers, and a dramatic but effortless stage presence.

Get ready for chart attacks, get ready for sell-out shows, get ready for Dubstep-ageddon - because for Magnetic Man, the lights are now most definitely on.

Magnetic Man's album is out Oct 4th.

Future Beginning

It's been a while since I've posted a new Roland Dubbs production. Some recent efforts have found their way onto my Soundcloud page but no further. Mainly because they were just little experiments using a few ideas. Nothing wrong with that, but as they were tunes I wouldn 't normally make I found it hard to relate to them, if you will.
I've been busy in the studio recently and I can promise you at least two more House tunes on the way - one is filter housey, while the other is most definitely jackin'! Back to the wobble.

The track that I bring you today is almost of Chemical Brothers ilk. An electronic journey, a release, a feel-good tune. With some polished production and some tidy compression of which I'm fairly proud (although that is through my monitors which aren't perfect!), I present...
'Future Beginning'.

Iron Heart

Netsky's album landed a couple of weeks back and is already establishing itself as one of the contenders for album of the year - I know this because my girlfriend, a self-proclaimed hater of drum & bass, actually bought the album after hearing it! The boy from Belgium is certainly making all the right noises.
Standout tunes on his self-titled debut include the likes of 'Secret Agent', 'Mellow' and 'Let's Leave Tomorrow', which I recommend to anyone regardless of whether you like drum & bass or not.
However, it's the first single 'Iron Heart' that gets a rare video treatment that I want to share with you. Available to watch in HD, featuring the obligatory "person running in an dance music video", but this time with a twist. Hospital's foray into music video's comes up trumps once again! And keep them peeled for a brand new High Contrast tune and video in the coming months...you have been warned ;)

There is certain musical terminology that seems to have almost become a taboo subject. Phrases that send the "cool kids" running for the hills while they scoff at the naiivity of the common people for daring to discuss or enjoy such a thing. Phrases such as "funky house".

I like 'house', and I enjoy a bit of funk from time to time. But do I enjoy "funky house"?
Well, if it all sounded like this amazing Tensnake remix of Johnny Dynell's hit "Jam Hot" then I would have to say yes!

This sun-kissed remix brings with it a sumptuous bassline, a sax that isn't overbearing, and a deeper understanding of what turns house music into good house music.

I realise some of my recent posts have been fairly Hospital Records heavy, something for which I shall not be apologising. It seems Tony Colman et al have been super busy of late, and everything is coming to a head this summer.

With artist albums and compilations in the pipeline it's Nu:Tone who has raised his head first with the absolute storming tune "Hyper Hyper" which has been ripping it's way through dancefloors for a few months already.

You've all heard that tune though, so it needs no more discussion.

For me the real gem lies on the b-side to the single release which is due out May 3rd. "Set Me Free" is almost hypnotising with that incredible synth work that can only be attributed to Dan Gresham - and Pat Fulgoni's sultry vocals of course! It was almost a month ago when taRDyboy got all excited about a beautiful remix of Antony & The Johnsons and posted a snippet of it up on the blog - a little prematurely. Of course, as a polite and respectful blogger I had to take it down. But now it's back, with permission - in it's full 320 glory and available for FREE DOWNLOAD!!!

I am quite happy to say that it is fast becoming one of my favourite songs... ever. By far one of the most delicate, balanced and beautiful tracks to grace my speakers this year. The whole production is sonically perfect; not only does S.I.N not tamper with the original too much, he adds electronic elements to it in such a way that it actually makes it more transcendent.

I've been away partying in Brighton for the last week - always good fun. It's also a good chance to catch up on some tunes in the car for the 10hr round trip. Amongst some other bits (Subfocus Mixmag CD, The Pacific Soundtrack) I got on with some more Hospital Podcasts. Their new compilation 'Sick Music 2' is fast approaching and here are a couple of choice cuts from the album.

First up is Illskillz tune 'Directions'. It's subtle yet sublime, the kind of tune that got me in to drum & bass all those years ago. You probably know Illskillz better as D.Kay and Rawfull, but no matter their name they are always on the button.

Second tune I'm going to bring to you is on the other, dirtier end of the vast D&B spectrum. Reso is a dubstep producer who has tried his hand and his basslines on a drum & bass tip, with outstanding results. Just have a listen to "Slap Chop" and you'll know that this is a tune that takes no prisoners.
Both tracks will soon be available through Hospital Records before the end of the month, and I strongly recommend you go buy the whole compilation - don't sleep!

Another World... of S.I.N

I've spent the evening catching up on my Hospital Podcasts. I've been subscribing for years now and they never fail to deliver. After just listening to the one from last week I heard this incredible bootleg playing in the background. On the podcast it gets talked over - as is the way, but it instantly struck a chord with me. I had to find it. Difficult task considering it's a drum & bass booty - they're never easy to come by.
Calling it a drum & bass booty, however, doesn't do it enough justice. It's a pure slice of absolute bliss, destined for a release - legal or not. If it doesn't give you goosebumps you have no soul.

It's an ambient, minimal-esque remix of Anthony & The Johnsons' "Another World" by Estonian producer S.I.N.
Let's get emotional.

Future Cooper

This beat tells the story of a man. A man who travelled back in time to warn his past-self about a grave mistake he was about to make.
The man spent 20 years of his life developing a time machine. All the effort and hard work not only caused his hair to receed, but stunted his growth too. Once the final blueprints had been drawn he committed the last of his energy to connect the wires and re-route the power.
The final product was a masterpiece. It revolutionised time and space as we know it. Prof. Hawkins was said to be "gobsmacked" and dubbed the man "a bit special".
So the man packed his 'Travel Cranberry' and set sail for March 6th 2010. His plan was complete. All that the man needed to do now was explain to the younger version of himself what not to do.
He was hesitant to meet his younger-self, with the fear that the world might implode. It didn't. He passed the message on with great success. His mission was complete.
There was however one huge problem... HIS YOUNGER-SELF IGNORED THE ADVICE AND WENT AND FUCKING DID THE THING HE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO ANYWAY!

My DJ!

When I first heard about this collabo I spent ages trying to find it with no success. Then it popped up on Zinc's superb 'Crack House' mix CD for Mixmag last month. Since then it's been released on the 'Wile Out' single feat. Ms. Dynamite. ('Blunt Edge' with an acapella basically - but still oh-so moreish!).
'My DJ' also features the talents of Ms. Dynamite, albeit only on a few vocal cuts.
The thing I love about this track is that it doesn't go over the top with the wobble. Zinc & Benga have deliberately kept it in check, and it works perfectly - it never gets too silly. It just sits there, staring at you from behind the fence, knowing that it's getting to you and burrowing deeper inside, all the while there's nothing you can do about it but stand there and enjoy it.
And trust me, after a handful of listens you'll just get it. It clicks. Hard. Hence why I spent the journey home from work on Friday with this bad-boy tune on repeat and cranked up to 11.

Two really contrasting tunes here from Zomby
The first is "Mercury's Rainbow", which recently featured on Martyn's sublime Fabric 50 Mix (which you should check out). The song plays out as if you've just shot into space in some future sci-fi adventure. And all the buttons and controls are sounding off at once. And through the g-force and adrenaline, all you can make out is the faint sound of this Zomby tune. Which basically sums up the video aswell!
The video is also probably the only one in existence that uses media-player visuals in a non-shit way, as it kinda suits what the song is trying to achieve. I can only link you to the YouTube page as embedding has been disabled for this tune (?)

The second Zomby tune is... well, it's a Skream remix. Ok. But that's a good thing... a very good thing. It's been doing the rounds for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages. And since that now I've decided to post anything that takes my, and taRDyboys' fancy (rather than just strictly new unsigned acts, which was proving fruitless), I shall post it right here. And you shall listen. And maybe dance.

The original is off Zomby's album "Where Were You In '92?", which does exactly what it says on the tin and provides plenty of ravey synths and nostalgia for all you old folks to reminisce too. The remix, however, is switched up a notch courtesy of the London boy-wonder Skream. And he's done a mighty fine job of it too. If you've seen him DJ at all over the last year you'll probably have heard it. In fact, if you can find your own arse with your hands you've probably already heard it anyway. But basically, it's mighty fine dance music at it's best. It also has a brilliant name... 'Skream's I Was In Infant School, Where Were You In '92 Remix'.

Get The Fuck Up!

I've just spent the last week partying in Brighton with some friends, both old and new - and all amazing, which was fantastic. We got bent to a wonky soundtrack all week, especially on the Thurs night at Donkey Pitch w/ Debruit and Slugabed which was rindonkulous! So I thought i'd share with you some rather large ish we were breaking our necks too...

It would be wrong to pigeonhole Slugabed as merely another Dubstep artist trying to cut his own path. With elements of glitched up sounds, 8bit fills, wonky basslines and some off-kilter hip hop drums, he's much more than your run-of-the-mill 140bpm-er. Just check out his latest EP - Ultra Heat Treated. It's full of little gems to get you bouncing!

And here's the first track of his I heard which totally sold me. It's one of, if not THE best remix of Pharoahe Monch's classic slice of hip hop "Simon Says". It keeps all the original aggression, but notches it up to 11 with some serious bassline deviousness making you feeling ten feet tall! Turn this motherfucker UP!

Next up for you to check is a Flying Lotus beat from last year. A serious head nodder on the hip hop side of things, with extra added spacey synths and twinkley bits! It also contains possibly our most quoted saying of the week... SWEET BERRY WINE. It's only short, but perfectly formed...

Now for a totally different sound.

Swiftly moving on from the wonky weavings of bassy hip hop to the more straight-paved slickness of well produced house with an electro twang.
I bring to you a Rory Philips Remix of heartfelt proportions. It's a remix of a tune from 1980 (1980 for fucks sake! I wasn't even alive. That's mad old!!) that includes some understated vocals sitting perfectly on the uplifting, feel good vibe the song creates. The original is from an outfit from San Francisco called The Units who now seem before their time with their synth-punk sounds.
If you do listen to the original (which i recommend), then you can see that Rory hasn't had to do too much to it, as the quality is already there. He's just brought it forward to 2010 and made it dancefloor accessible - of the hands in the air variety. It's a great tune, enjoy the synthery goodness...

I first came across Martyn a number of years back on a Fabric compilation mixed by High Contrast. As my music listening rotation swings back and forth from drum & bass to other forms of electonic music it's easy to lose track of artists from time-to-time.

I noticed over the last year or so that Martyn hasn't been making Drum & Bass per se, or rather what i've heard hasn't been deebee - (I may be wrong?). There has been odds and sods of dubstep and techno and the like, but not what I expected. A fleeting glance at his myspace address would lead you to believe he is making d&b, but a quick listen to the the tracks on his player would suggest otherwise...

Normally when people blog after a long absence they sign in with "Oh I'm sorry but things really got on top of me", or "I've been totally slack, sorry dudes". We read these statements and never really feel much empathy towards our fellow bloggers. Now, I'm not asking for extra Christmas cards or anything, but I do ask you to listen to my story and search deep within you for your xmas spirit and share my pain that was November and the first part of December.

November starts and some fat (technically she was pregnant, but I was angry) idiot proceeded to pull out in front of my new car for no reason other than that she is an idiot.

It was a 40mph road, so I did my best to swerve but had little chance. After much paperwork and extended phone call bollocks, I managed to persuade her insurance to fix my Audi A3 T Sport ('oooooh' I hear you say!). It has been almost 7 weeks now though, and I still haven't got it back. Total cost to her - £5k. Merry Fucking Christmas, bitch.

Then to make matters worse, the tossers that are Ofsted (big major scary school inspectors for those that don't know) decided to contact our school and tell us they could drop in anytime over the next 20 working days (4 weeks to normal people). So for four weeks everyone at work has been mad tense and overworked. Needless to say, they fucking arrived on the 20th of 20 days (CUNTS). Things went well, but it has only been this last week in which I have managed to return to normality!

Fuck, what am I on about - you people aren't arsed about any of that, you just want some music!

Right then - the important stuff...

Here is the latest episode of the adventures of Roland Dubbs courtesy of Mr. Hope! (Click to view) I've been sitting on this for a hot minute, ironic it should include my car! As friends, we constantly push each other to do better. I asked him for a new comic, he asked me to make a tune to accompany the comic. He delivered this to me - an alien themed mini story. So I created my tune "The Lonely Life Of A Misunderstood Alien".

It's very ambient, with lots of luscious sound design on my part. I must admit, I had just bought 'The Future Sound Of Russia' on Hospital's awesome label, so I dare say there was some inspiration from the likes of Bop et al. It's definitely a different sound for me, but I do love experimenting with all the styles and demonstrating what I can do! Enjoy!!

Next on the list is another tune I made. It's very tight technically and one I'm very proud of. Again, it's the not the jacking, wonky sound of my few more popular tracks, nor is it another trip down dubstep lane. It's uplifting, and more dancey with a very catchy hook and some simply gorgeous homemade sounds that sink so well into one-another. Read "Deadmau5 on a comedown" and your about halfway there.

As you may already know, I am a regular guest at Thirsty Ear's awesome nights at The Harley in Sheffield. Good friends of the blog, Paulo and East have been putting on slammin' shows for years now, recently featuring Chimpo, No Fakin' DJ's, Boca45, Paul White, DJ Woody, Kidkanevil and Bullion to name but a few.

They have records on the way, mashups under their belt, and recognition from some big labels, record stores and proper headz. There is also a radio documentary featuring Thirsty Ear and myself coming out in January on UK Undiscovered, detailing where we came from and how we got here. It features input from lots of people including some of my tunes! Definitely one to watch out for! Anyway, on NYE @ The Harley they are having a fucking HUGE party. It's already been featured in Exposed magazine as the best place to be on NYE in Sheff. I'll let them explain it to you...

After spending the last few days killing zombies, watching Woody Harrelson perform 'Double Taps' and reigniting my love for sick Drum & Bass, I decided to try and make a soundtrack to fit such a scenario...you know, like that time when...
'Woody Harrelson double tapped a zombie at a Drum & Bass rave Emceed by Liam Neeson' - we were all there.
It's 171bpm - but very deceptive with it's shuffling beat and drum pattern - not strictly Drum & Bass, and not Dubstep either. It does however have a ridiculously large bassline that hoovers up everything around it. Sounding a lot more evil than normal, I give you...

3. Diplo rocked at Creamfields this year (check previous post).
4. I met Switch at Creamfields last year.
5. Pon De Floor is definitely one of the biggest party tunes of the year.

How could I turn down the opportunity to remix it? I couldn't.

Everybody tries to do something special for August Bank Holiday weekend, it's a British institution. No matter who you are, the choices seem endless.
I chose to go to Creamfields. Just like I did last year. And once again it was incredible, thoroughly deserving of it's moniker of 'best dance festival in the world'. The above photo sums it up really - you just want to be there.
As you would expect, lots of alcohol was involved - particularly my favourite drink of the moment; Sailor Jerrys and coke, which was mainly the reason why I don't remember the first half of the Saturday in the arena. Apparently I saw all the acts I wanted to see, I just can't remember it for the life of me! So who rocked Saturday you asked? Well let me tell you...

SATURDAY:
Spent most of it in the Ape tent and saw;

(...then nipped out the tent with the intention of coming back for High Contrast - but it seems like EVERYONE had the same idea, so I couldn't get back in - Gutted. I hope you enjoyed a full tent Lincoln - I was about 15 deep and that was just at the bloody entrance!
I have been the biggest High Contrast fan for a very, very long time now - ever since True Colours bust onto the scene. I've seen him all over the country and he never fails to absolutely smash it. I buy practically everything he produces including his Two Fisted Tales stuff, and I'm chuffed he now writes his own blog 'Highly Contrasting' too. He is one of my hero's and he demonstrates to me that you can be intelligent, well read and sensible yet still make slammin' electronic music that destroys any rave.
People often assume that to make 'dance' music that's dirty/uplifting/off the beaten track, you must be off your face on something - Mr. Barrett shows this isn't the case. I remember bumping into him at Hospitality @ Plug way back in like Feb or something - and being so star struck that all I could muster was "Fuckin' amazing mate". What an idiot. Anyway - I love The Contrast, I think you get the picture.

By this point on Sat I was at the height of my Sailor Jerrys dreamboat to drunkeness so I think I also saw...

All in all - a good day.

SUNDAY: (much more successful as far as the temporary amnesia goes)

Diplo - highlight of the weekend, chuffed to see so many people digging the Diplo - when he dropped "Pon De Floor" things just went mad. Serious.
Annie Mac - pleasantly surprised, knows her shit and totally killed it...
FAAAAKE BLOOOOOD - Highlight along with Diplo. His ability to edit on the fly using CDJ's and for it to never sound shit was out of this world - and with a healthy dose of some serious scratching he stole the show. His set just bubbled along seemlessly and always erupted just at the right time.
Deadmau5 - seemed all good, missed the unveiling of his new head as I was at Fake Blood, but I was too far away to tell what Deadmau5 was doing - bit gutted...so I headed to...
Basement Jaxx - The Jaxx demonstrated why they are one of the biggest names in dance. I'm hesitant at seeing acts on the big stage because sometimes it's just so huge it's hard to get down with crowd and not seem distant up there and out of the way. But Basement Jaxx have obviously been doing this for such a long time they knew what they were doing. Their own material was brilliant with some excellent live skits added and extra BIGNESS for the live show. They also droppped/covered some recent big tunes including a few Dubstep tunes, which was right up my alley - definitely better than I ever expected.

Creamfields review over. Excellent weekend, best value for money (only £100 a ticket!), Diplo and Fake Blood won it for me. See you next year.

I got back onto a vinyl tip and went crate digging a tiny bit... it's always more satisfying when you have a phat 12" in your hand.
Copped some Caspa, some Daft Punk, some Two Fisted Tales (read High Contrast), some Benga, some Herve, some Renaissance Man...
I also caught a few blockbusters at the cinema - Star Trek (alright), Terminator Salvation (thumbs up....GET IT?!! HAHAHA) and Drag Me To Hell (dire).

Anyway, onto the tune.
I downloaded the Amanda Blank acapella from Discobelle for a remix contest...(still available if you head over there...it's on my list on the right--->). It's a decent tune itself, although I was actually reluctant to listen to it. I enjoy making remixes with acapellas without having heard the original track just to see the contrast between the tracks. Even though I listened to it though, the two tunes are very, very different. Oh, and Miss Blank is pretty hot too...

Well I didn't set out to remix Joy Division. Honestly I didn't!

I made this dubstep track and got to a point where it needed something extra that I couldn't quite put my finger on... then I realised the chord sequence was really familiar. Too familiar.
I knew it straight away, but didn't realise how well it would actually work. It's only a teeny sample, but as the original is such a great track I didn't need to use large parts of it.

With a little tweaking here and there, I truly believe we have a potential 'end of the night' dubstep anthem! "PARP!" <-- that's my trumpet being blown right there! Here it is, the massiveness that is...

Firstly - big thanks to all at Noise Porn for posting my dubstep remix of The Stranglers (check previous post). I've had good feedback so far from a number of folk. According to Hypem.com The Bulgarian likes it - which is alright by me. I hope it succeeds in raising the roof at all your house parties and club nights...or wherever you find yourself buggin' out to it :)

Secondly, here's another new tune from myself, Roland Dubbs. Basically, it's some big wonky fidget business. A lush, summery intro for the summer season, leading into a loud, crude dancefloor wobbler for the summer festivals! (Speaking of festivals, I've got my Creamfields ticket - get on board yo!)

Walking on the beaches...

On my last trip down to Brighton a couple of weeks ago, myself and a few mates went to see Tittsworth @ Audio. I didn't have to spend much time convincing others to go...they must trust my choices...anyway, he was pretty brill - playing everything from house to dubstep, drum & bass to full on party anthems.
Whilst having a boogie, two of my friends were discussing how "The Stranglers - Peaches" would be awesome with a dubstep remix...I agreed with them...and then worked my socks off to get a copy, and give it the treatment before they could!
You snooze you lose suckaaaaaaaaaaas!

So here it is, a grizzly dubstep remix of 'Peaches' by myself. It was quite tricky with all the tiiiiiiiiiiime stretching involved, but rewarding nonetheless. A bit of fun to liven up your dancefloors...

And another hectic weekend over. I popped over to Sheffield on Saturday night for Thirsty Ear's (check recent posts) monthly knees up. It was another great night, and the special guests Rob Luis and Natural Self of Tru Thoughts fame certainly did not fail to deliver. Always good to slow things down with a bit of Hip Hop from time to time.

Hang on a minute....did I just say there were two brand new tunes in there? Yes I did! Best let you lot have them then, hadn't I?

First new tune is called "Gotta Be" and is a little slower and groovier than some of the tearout, dancefloor business floating around. With a chopped up Common acapella and some odd little squeeks and bleeps, it certainly loosens those neck muscles for a good old nod-along. There's no chance that it'll turn from a nod-along to a nod-off though, as slap bang in the middle of the track is a super camp disco breakdown. It's pretty wonderful. Think Mr Oizo's 'Gay Dentists' and you're halfway there....just a lot more gay. Lots of gay in fact. Lemme know what you think...

The second new tune is titled "Gettin' Down"...we all like to get down. Again it's a little calmer than normal, with an almost Minimal-esque intro. A simple clicky bassline sandwiched between some more weird sounds and stabs that help to create a nice little roller. It has a stranger, more eery feel to it. Jazzy biscuits.

After co-rocking the show at the last Thirsty Ear in Sheffield with JDevious, (see above - he's in yellow, I'm in my white taRDyboy tee!) and working together on the last taRDyboy mixtape (see below) he kindly asked for the parts of "Desert" so he could twist it into a wonky house jam. I obliged...he delivered!
There is a simplicity to the remix, but it's not for the simple. The bassline is a head nodder and definitely quite wrong, but it works a fuckin' treat! Expect to hear a lot more coming out of the JDevious camp.... and maybe even a couple of collabo's! Watch this space.

You know when you completely forget about a tune, only to rediscover it years down the line and fall in love with it over again? Well, in my quest to recommend some tunes to a friend I happened back upon Romanthony's classic tune "The Wanderer"...(circa '94 i think?)
(There are a couple of versions of this track - I think the one I love is the "CD Remix #9")

I had this gem about 8-9 years ago, only to let it slip through the net somewhere along the way. It's such a beautiful song, I knew I just had to do something with it.
Problem is, I wanted to keep the same feeling it emotes and not fuck with it too much, you know - just basically convert it to a 4/4 beat, a bit of sidechaining, chop it up a little etc etc.
Usually with my Roland Dubbs' stuff it's all about the jackin', wobbly bass....but I couldn't do that to this song. It's just too nice...

Although Romanthony has worked with the likes of Daft Punk, don't be confused - he is a US House producer, working out of New Jersey originally. My remix has given this track a bit of a French House feel...hence the title "Roland Dubbs' Wandering In Paris Remix". So it's a little different to my other stuff!

I also recommend 'Romanthony - Floorpiece', it's on a totally different tip, more dancefloor orientated, and another favourite of mine that I HAVEN'T lost!

I've had a really eventful last week or so, which has resulted in me not checking my emails for said amount of time....only to find some gems hidden amongst the... errrrr... other stuff.

To explain...

The first part of the week was spent in Brighton where I span a liquid Drum & Bass set in the corner of a quiet bar on Valentines Day...needless to say everyone was elsewhere getting their dicks and tits sucked....the staff enjoyed it though.

After that I shot up to London to go to a J Dilla tribute gig on the anniversary of his sad passing, only to find out that everyone else had the same idea, and Cargo was ram packed - which made it harder to take when I couldn't get in after waiting for tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime.

However, all this was made up for after spending the weekend in Barcelona. Very debaucherous time there which consisted of lots of alcohol, partying and 90,000 upset Barcelona fans after watching their team lose in the Barcelona derby against Espanyol...who are rock bottom of the table...right good watching a game in the Nou Camp though... ANYWAY...

There are my excuses, and they are good ones...so NERRR.

So I check my inbox yeah, and found out that the system actually works... the word is getting around about the blog, and people are beginning to send me stuff. Mixes, remixes, tracks, photo's...the lot. It's good to know that new DJ's and artists take the initiative to get their stuff out there and take a chance. And I have to say, there is a LOT of good stuff coming out of the UK at the moment. Electronic music is crazy-hot right now, the big guns consistently deliver - but more importantly there is a scene of up-and-coming producers that are pretty much on the button, running their own nights and spreading the cheer of good tunes and party vibes throughout the land. I likes. Which brings me nicely to another southern head pressing said buttons...

Teen Symmetry (pictured) is a young, hip producer with all the right credentials... Hoodie? Check. Cap? Check. Haircut? Check. Trendy artwork? Check. Remixes under his belt? Check. Talent? Definitely.
He dropped me a line through Facebook no less with links to mixes and tunes, not for me... but for YOU! How very kind. After listening through the tunes on his Myspace, which I recommend, I can see similarities between what TS does with the likes of Drop The Lime, amongst others. And that ain't no bad thing. He makes the kind of music that's a little too fast to be house, a little too much fun to be techno, and not cheesy enough to be electro...yet takes elements from all three... the kind of music that makes the party go off. Ya get me? Plenty of loud and screechy sirens, stabs and synths. Here's an intro from the boy himself...

"Teen Symmetry is the musical incarnation of producer Erin Davies. After playing in bands since the age of 18, the now 21 year old has turned his hands to his laptop, midi mixers and keyboards. Ok, so I wouldn't expect anyone outside of my home town to know this, but the home of alternative music in Buxton - 'Mood', and it's downstairs sister venue; 'Mood Basement', has closed it's doors for the final time. A shock to many, including now legendary manager Simon Aldous, the news came yesterday completely out of the blue that the whole venue is, basically, going to be liquidised. As of today there will be an empty shell of what was once Buxton's very BEST nightclub for House, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass, Soul, Funk, Bmore, Electro, Hardcore, Grindcore, Jungle and literally anything off the beaten track - Mood was always willing to give it a go...
And more often than not, it worked - from 2003 until 2008, here is the story of Mood, told from a personal perspective, but an entertaining one, by fellow DJ and bezzie friend of Roland Dubbs - Figure Of Wax....
(to anyone who was lucky enough to find themselves in the Basement on a Saturday night - there will be some part here you can relate to and appreciate, guaranteed!)

"From the days when doorman Tim would let us into 'Burlingtons' at 16 (we'd sneak downstairs round the pool tables so we wouldn't get caught drinking) through to working for 18 months behind the bar - not to mention our night in The Basement (April 30th 2004 - 2008)...I have a vast amount of excellent memories regarding Mood.
Mood and The Basement was and still is the ONLY thing in Buxton / Derbyshire to let open-minded young artists / DJs introduce new and exciting music to people - consider it the John Peel of the venues!
In the years which we proudly rocked The Basement (and sometimes the main bar) I have personally seen artists go from strength to strength, to name a few:

*Bob Adams' Punk Night*
Although the name of the night escapes me, the very first alternative night to grace Mood Basement was Bob's capacity-smashing punk night. Wall to wall with the likes of The Kirkz, Monkeyshuffle, Creosote, Sperm Free Nation and many more - it went off! It was the first time people realised that something different was happening in Bucco and the curiosity worked without fail.

*Emergency Services*
I remember the day Jim, Tom Speed and I approached Simon about putting on a night and offering to do the first two for free as a taster. A year later I think we had drunk himout of £1000's of stock and went back to doing it for free! It was the first DJ night at Mood and I'd like to think we did a good job of things... Through any sketchiness it has led to us now serving under several guises across the UK:
Figure Of Wax, Electrique / Roland Dubbs, .gingerbrown, taRDyboy, whataboutthebeats?...
ES played host to such acts as Paper Tiger (now running 'Future Rhythm' @ Leeds Faversham), Blessed House (live support to Verb T + Mystro), These Monsters musicians (Leeds / Reading Festival BBC Radio 1 Tent 2008) and many, many more...

*Elements / Keepin' It Dusty...*
Coop, Matter Of Fact, LA Soul - These dudes opened my eyes to the fact that there were other heads out there and we now all had a platform to work from. On our first anniversary night of ES we'd left it too late to book - these lads had pipped us to it! Rather than fanny about and cancel, we hooked up on the same night and bounced back and forth - to the point where eventually we became the same night!

*Thirsty Ear*
Easily the most focused group of DJs to take The Basement's atmosphere and let it grow into one of Sheffield's best new nights. Without doubt the best fancy dress nights and ridiculous banger DJ battles (Urban Smackdown 2005 - need I say more? ;) went off here. Always good fun and the way it should be! One of my favourite Basement memories is going mental to 'Once in a lifetime' by Talking Heads on Thirsty Ear's Christmas Eve party 2006.

*Doom*
The Marionette Records crew have roared down ear canals and pierced their drums from The Basement to the internet with releases on both iTunes and Canada's DTRASH label over the years. I've seen many sights that have mentally scarred me at Doom - mainly they involve people being naked and I'm almost certain one has involved a horse. If anyone remember Alex and his magical bumbag from Doom then I'm sure they'll be smiling ;)

*Soundboy Massacre*
Jack and Waggy kept it dutty with the hardest jungle, d+b, breaks and reggae sets under the pavement. I used to love warming up Soundboy and knew they were onto a winner whenever they organised a Main Floor bash or simply rammed the place with more people than possible. If Rick Baker had his top off and was trying to climb on top of the speakers to Woolfy's set- you knew you were at a proper party. Paid off though as Mr. WAGZ now has a safe spot at Sheffield's Detonate (playing alongside the likes of Roni Size, Goldie, High Contrast...)

Moving to the main bars - working there was without a doubt a way to make the monotony of small-town living worth living. Drunken kisses or fights made work exciting but even on cold, dead winter nights it'd still be sweet as chilling with a takeaway pizza and watching Extreme channel.
Although I've been out of Buxton for a couple of years now, Mood's always been a safe place to return to when I'm back. All I will say (and I honestly hope any heads from Buxton who either manage or own venues are reading this) Buxton will entirely lose touch of creativity unless somewhere can capture the ethos that Mood did. The last time I can remember a scene in Buxton this big was back when my brother and his friends put on raves as Black Moon Soundsystem. That was around 15 years ago!

Simon, I wish you and the family all the best and I'm very sorry to hear the news. Good luck with it all and cheers for the opportunities - time well spent. Everyone else: please continue to support and achieve the work that Mood staff have put inover the years - Buxton needs it.

taRDyboy is proud to bring you it's first ever...and second ever...club nights! They're gonna take place during Freshers Fortnight at Mood - a venue which has played host to some excellent nights over the last 6 years.

As it's our debut club night we're giving the residents a run out, so expect to hear some wonky fidgit house carnage from ya boys Roland Dubbs and JDevious as they bring you that main floor loving!

The first gig takes place on Weds 24th Sep (7pm-2am), and the second on Fri 3rd Oct (7pm-3am). The drinks offers are ridiculous - 7-8pm: All drinks £1 / 8pm onwards: All drinks £1.50!! And to top it off entry is free! That's right, ridic DJ's, ridic tunes and ridic-cheap drrankkks as well as FREE ENTRY!

Sorry for the delay folks - I have a pretty good excuse... I've been to Creamfields! Woop. Yes, it was amazing, thanks for asking. As you can see from the photo above I met some pretty cool people. There's me on the left, next to Herve, and Switch just second in from the right. Not bad ey? It was about 10mins before Switch's set in the Bugged Out! Tent.
Highlights for myself included Skream & Benga, Herve, Switch, Noisia, Andy C, Matrix & Futurebound, 2manydjs, Underworld, and rather surprisingly Tiesto. I don't like trance, but the sheer magnitude of that show and the vast amount of people in what must be the biggest tent in the world was quite amazing! Needless to say, I got my wonk on all weekend and had a blast.

New tune time. Yeah so just before I headed out to Creamfields I made a new tune as Roland Dubbs. It's full-on dancefloor wobble business and it's called "Keep It On The Low" - you can get it here...

Neil Middleton and Neil Ramjee are making waves. Partly because they DJ regularly in the seaside town of Bournemouth, but mainly because they are an exciting and adventurous DJ tag-team who spin sublime 'electro-n-anything-goes' and throw big-ass parties across the south of the UK! Did you know.... Your Boyfriends Are DJ's?

Neil M. hails from Lichfield, and Neil. R from Surrey, both now based in Salisbury, Wiltshire. I first met Neil M. through a mutual friend, and after regularly exchanging great music over the net I managed to make it down to one of his club nights - 'Dirty Boots'. dB was an indie clubnight at The Barn (notice how I say 'was'), and at it's peak it played host to the likes of The Holloways and The Duke Spirit. After much success over the years the boys decided to hang up their boots on a high and push things forward with Your Boyfriends Are DJ's (YBAD). Dirty Boots died, but it's spirit lived on through YBAD.

Very recently YBAD threw a HUGE free rave at their old haunt 'The Barn', and having seen the photo's and heard the feedback I can tell you these boys mean business. Definitely check the photo's on their facebook group and on their myspace page. They are also the best places to keep upto date with all their moves and the only place to check out their mixes!

They currently DJ regularly at The iBar and 60 Million Post Cards, both in Bournemouth, but their newest adventure begins this Sunday (August 10th) courtesy of radio station Deep Blue FM. For the first time it will be broadcasting live from Your Boyfriends Are DJ's @ iBar. So from 9pm - 11pm on Sunday night turn on, tune in and bug out to the sounds of Your Boyfriends...! (You never know, they may even play some Roland Dubbs joints ;)
